Friends of Volo Bog is a non-profit, volunteer-run organization dedicated to the preservation of Volo Bog State Natural Area, Illinois' only only-water quaking bog.

Volo Bog is a site like nowhere else in Illinois. This acidic wetland is home to a host of unique species, several of which are typically found farther north.

The Friends of Volo Bog founded in 1983 to protect the site and promote educational activities. We're still doing that today through tours, programming, land restoration, scholarships, and much more!

What's there to do in the bog?

Volo Bog is open every day of the week dawn-to-dusk for visitors to walk and explore. The visitor center is open Wednesday through Sunday from 9am-3pm, or as staff are available.

We also offer weekly bog tours and frequent educational programs! Click on the button below to learn more about these opportunities.

You can support our mission by volunteering, joining the Friends, or donating.

We have lots of different volunteer opportunities throughout the year, such as being a docent, working specific events, or operating social media pages. Joining the Friends is a great way to help protect Volo Bog and comes with several membership benefits. See the Join Us page to learn more.

We accept donations via cash, check, or online through Square. All donations go directly to supporting the bog.

Friends of Volo Bog is a 501(c)(3) whose mission is to promote citizen awareness of the local natural heritage of Volo Bog State Natural Area, portions of which are dedicated state nature preserves, and to preserve the same through special events, educational and training programs, acquisitions of properties for such purposes and take whatever steps deemed necessary to insure the continued care and preservation of Volo Bog State Natural Area as a natural site.
